Description
The five things that actually matter, in a gift box. If you are buying your first matcha kit, this is the honest version — no filler pieces you will never touch.
What’s in the box
- Chawan — wide ceramic bowl with a pouring spout, so you can whisk in the bowl and pour straight into a glass over ice
- Chasen — 100-prong bamboo whisk
- Whisk stand — ceramic, keeps the prongs in shape between uses
- Sifter — fine stainless mesh, the step most people skip and shouldn’t
- Chashaku — bamboo scoop, roughly 1 g per scoop
The pouring spout is the detail worth paying attention to. Most traditional chawan have none, which means iced matcha involves a second vessel and a spill. This one goes bowl to glass in one move.
Looking after it
- Soak the chasen prongs in warm water for 30 seconds before the first use of the day.
- Rinse bamboo in warm water only — no soap, never a dishwasher.
- Stand the chasen on its holder to dry, never flat.
- The bowl and holder are ceramic: dishwasher safe, but hand washing keeps the glaze better.
About the glaze
These are reactive glazes fired in Dehua, the porcelain town in Fujian that has been making tea ware for six centuries. Reactive means every piece comes out slightly different — the depth of green and the way it breaks over the raised pattern will not be identical to the photograph. That is the glaze working, not a fault.
Japanese-style form, made in China.
